How car sales tax works in Arizona

Arizona charges a 5.6% state transaction privilege tax (TPT) plus the county and city rate where the dealer is located. In Phoenix the combined retail rate is 8.6% (5.6% state, 0.7% Maricopa County, 2.3% city).

  • Trade-in credit: the trade-in allowance is subtracted before tax.
  • Manufacturer rebates reduce the tax when you assign the rebate to the dealer.
  • Doc fee: there is no cap. It pays state and county tax, but cities cannot tax it.
  • Private-party sales are not taxed. You pay only MVD fees and the VLT.
  • Out-of-state buyers: if your home state has a lower rate and gives credit for Arizona tax, the state and county part matches your home-state rate. Residents of states with no sales tax pay no state or county tax. City tax still applies if you take delivery in Arizona. A car the dealer ships out of state is exempt.

Title and registration fees in Arizona

FeeAmount
Title fee$4
Registration fee$8
Air quality research fee$1.50
Vehicle license tax, first year$2.80 per $100 of 60% of MSRP
Vehicle license tax, later years$2.89 per $100
Electric or hybrid vehicle fee$0

The vehicle license tax (VLT) is the big number. It is based on 60% of the manufacturer's base retail price, not on what you paid. A car with a $32,000 MSRP pays $537.60 in its first year. The value then drops 16.25% every year. Electric cars first registered since 2023 pay the regular VLT and no extra EV fee.

Example: a $32,000 new car

Price $32,000.00, $1,000.00 manufacturer rebate, $8,000.00 trade-in and a $499.00 doc fee, bought from a dealer:

Transaction privilege tax (TPT) (5.6%)$1,315.94
Local tax (3%)≈ $704.97
Title fee$4.00
Registration fee$537.60
Registration fee$8.00
Air quality research fee$1.50
Total taxes$2,020.91
Total government fees$551.10
Out-the-door price$34,071.01
After the trade-in, you pay$26,071.01

Common mistakes

  • Using your home city's rate instead of the dealer's location. Arizona sources a dealer sale to the dealer's county and city.
  • Expecting the VLT to follow your negotiated price. It is based on 60% of MSRP, so discounts do not lower it.
  • Budgeting sales tax on a private-party purchase. Arizona does not tax casual sales between individuals.

Arizona questions

What is the sales tax on a car in Arizona?

5.6% state TPT plus the county and city rate where the dealer is located. In Phoenix the combined rate is 8.6%.

Do I pay sales tax on a private-party car in Arizona?

No. Casual sales between individuals are not taxed. You pay the $4 title fee, the $8 registration fee and the VLT at MVD.

How is the Arizona VLT calculated?

First year: $2.80 per $100 of 60% of MSRP, or $537.60 on a $32,000 MSRP. After that the value drops 16.25% a year and the rate is $2.89 per $100.

Do a trade-in and a rebate lower Arizona car tax?

Yes. The trade-in allowance is subtracted, and so is a manufacturer's cash rebate assigned to the dealer.

Do out-of-state buyers pay Arizona sales tax on a car?

Residents of states with no sales tax pay no state or county tax, but city tax applies if they take delivery in Arizona. A car the dealer ships out of state is exempt.
