How car sales tax works in California
California charges 7.25% statewide plus district taxes, so most buyers pay between 7.25% and 11.75%. What matters is the address where the car will be registered, not where the dealer is. If you live inside a city with its own district tax you pay that city's rate. If you live in an unincorporated area you pay the county rate.
- Your trade-in does not reduce the tax. California is one of the few states that taxes the full selling price, even when you trade in a car. A $30,000 car with a $10,000 trade-in is still taxed on $30,000.
- Manufacturer rebates do not reduce the tax when they are assigned to the dealer. A discount the dealer gives you does lower it.
- The doc fee is taxable, and it is capped at $85 ($70 for dealers that are not DMV private industry partners).
- Private-party sales: you pay use tax at your address rate when you register the car at the DMV.
- Family: gifts and sales between parents, children, grandparents, grandchildren and spouses or registered domestic partners are exempt. Adult siblings are not.
DMV fees on a car bought in California
On a new car, or a used car whose registration is due, the DMV charges:
| Fee | Amount |
|---|---|
| Registration fee | $76 |
| California Highway Patrol (CHP) fee | $34 |
| Vehicle license fee (VLF) | 0.65% of value |
| Transportation improvement fee (TIF) | $33 – $231 |
| Title fee (new) / transfer fee (used) | $28 / $15 |
| Smog abatement (new, first 8 years) | $20 |
| County / district fees | varies |
The TIF depends on the car's value: $33 under $5,000, $66 up to $24,999, $132 up to $34,999, $198 up to $59,999 and $231 from $60,000. Electric cars (model 2020 and newer) also pay a $121 road improvement fee, but not at the first registration of a new EV bought from a dealer.
Example: a $32,000 new car in Los Angeles
Price $32,000.00, $1,000.00 manufacturer rebate, $8,000.00 trade-in and a $85.00 doc fee, bought from a dealer:
| Sales tax (10.25%) | $3,288.71 |
| Title fee | $28.00 |
| Registration fee | $76.00 |
| CHP fee | $34.00 |
| Vehicle license fee (0.65% of value) | $208.00 |
| Transportation improvement fee | $132.00 |
| Smog abatement fee | $20.00 |
| County / district fees (estimate) | ≈ $10.00 |
| Total taxes | $3,288.71 |
|---|---|
| Total government fees | $508.00 |
| Out-the-door price | $34,881.71 |
| After the trade-in, you pay | $26,881.71 |
Common mistakes
- Subtracting the trade-in before calculating tax (California does not allow it).
- Using the dealer's city rate instead of the rate where you live and register the car.
- Paying more than $85 in documentation fees.
